For those of you who do not own a house of your own yet, have you ever considered the bedroom you have now as
your own little home? Just think, it is your little place that you have and take care of until you are ready to move out. Your little place to call your own and make it you! Your own home-sweet-home.
Having a room, whether shared with a sibling or two or just by yourself can be great practice for your future home! The way you are tending your room now will most likely be how you will take care of your house in the future. This is a great opportunity!
The wise women builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. (Proverbs 14:1)
We are to learn how to be wise keepers of our home, and the time to learn starts now!
The basics:
It doesn’t take an experienced woman to know the simple things involved in taking care of your room. Dusting, cleaning, vacuuming, organizing, and doing laundry are the things like any skill, that get easier after putting them into practice everyday. Pretty soon you can do them without thinking! It may seem like work (depending on your present care taking) but you will thank yourself once you’re finished.
Also note, that your room is not just your room. If you are living in your parent’s house still, it is their room too. All the more to keep it staying nice and neat.
Sharing:
I know it’s not always easy sharing a room. I remember years ago when my sister and I shared a room together; I
simply couldn’t stand it! Mostly because, let’s just say, she wasn’t the tidiest person around…and being the neat freak person that I am, every little mess or out of placed thing really got on my nerves. None-the-less I did learn a few things. One thing I realized, is how much I tried to control the situation (and Kelly’s cleaning habits I’m sure), therefore letting my frustration run the show rather than the encouragement and help I needed to be showing her. Yes, she definitely could of made some drastic changes then, but choosing the way I responded was definitely something I could of changed.
Serving:
Not only should you keep up on your own room, but extend a hand to help with the needs of your parents or siblings, and take on some of the regular work around the house. Because in the years to come, you will have much more to take care of besides that of your own room. Making meals, washing floors, babysitting younger siblings, running errands… etc. All are wonderful ways to bless and serve your family while learning for your own benefit.
Motives:
Develop the right motives, and above all, the right heart. Cleaning your room, or doing everything only because your parents tell you too shouldn’t be your only reason. Like I explained in the paragraphs above, it’s to serve, practice, and learn, and above all, be working at everything as if we are working for the Lord, not for men!
Making time:![]()
Another important thing in taking care of your room is finding the time. If need be, mark it on your calendar so you can stick to it. For me, I always try to clean and put my things away before I go to sleep. That way, in the morning I wake up to a clean, mess free room and am ready to start my day!
Making it YOU:
When it comes to your room, you want it to be a place you actually enjoy being in. Remember, it’s your own little “home-sweet-home” and should reflect your personality, your special tastes, and your own style. Whatever you do, just have fun and be creative!
If you share a room, and both of you have different tastes, maybe you could compromise a little. Who knows, together you could come up with something totally cool and uniqe that you may never have come up with on your own!

Great post Kira! I used to share a room with my big and little brother and my little sister – but that was only until I was seven! Now I just share with Nomi. We cope really well together – in fact I wouldn’t want to have a room of my own, I don’t think (not that I’m given any choice!).
When tidy (for although I like things tidy I can let things get out of hand sometimes!) our room is quite pretty and works well together. Last year Mum taught Nomi, myself and three other girls how to make a quilt, and our matching finished products now hang proudly above our beds, side by side – it is quite neat!
Thanks for the great reminder – now I had better go tidy up my room after our camping trip!
Love Jess
