Annoying Side Stitches?

I wish I could say I jog regularly, but unfortunately, I do not.  But needless to say, when I do, I always quit early due to those annoying, painful side stitches I get in my side.  I don’t know if it’s just me who gets them constantly or what… but I do know, I don’t want to have them anymore.

So, I did some research, and with some experimenting, I found out a few simple tricks that have worked for me and has enabled me to jog  a lot longer than I was able to.

  • Avoid eating 1-2 hours before running
  • Start out in a slow jog, then build up speed as you progress
  • Exhale as you land on your left foot.  It puts less stress on the right side, where it’s most common for side stitches to happen - due to the stress of your liver pulling down on your diaphram.
  • Tighten your stomach muscles
  • Lean slightly forward as you run
  • Practice different breathing methods.  Longer, deeper breathes, and try pursing your lips as you exhale every so often
  • Keep yourself hydrated!!

So there you have it.  I few simple tricks to keep those annoying side stitches away.  Hopefully they work for you, and if you have any tips and tricks of your own, go ahead and share in a comment.  :)
