Modesty from the Heart

True modesty begins in the heart, and is an attitude more than what we wear.

If we are dressing modestly in the clothes that we wear, but our attitude is not God glorifying, then can we really say that we are being modest??  If we are to be modest, and a witness for Christ by the way we dress, we must also be a witness and show modesty in our behavior and speach.  For true modesty comes from the heart.

Consider the words from C.J. Mahaney:

Any conversation about modesty “starts in the intent of the heart.” So consider for a moment, what is the intent of your heart in purchasing clothes to wear? Does a humble heart and a servant’s heart dictate your wardrobe and appearance? Is your shopping informed and governed by modesty and restraint? Or is your dress motivated by a desire for attention and approval from others? Does your style reflect a lack of self-control?  There’s an inseparable link between your heart and your clothes. Your clothes say something about your attitude. If they don’t express a heart that is humble, that desires to please God, that longs to serve others, that’s modest, that exercises self-control, then change must begin in the heart.

For modesty is humility expressed in dress.

Here are 7 excerpts C.J. Mahaney posted from the chapter on modesty from his book Worldliness.  I encourage you to read them!  :)  They are really good.  On these hot summer days, we must be careful of how we dress, and to review the importance of modesty!

I would love to be added!

That was a great post. That is so true about “True modesty begins in the heart” I love that!

    2. Thank you for that great reminder. Yes, our outward appearance reflects what is in our heart!

I really like your blog as well! I’ve really enjoyed photography, though I wish I wrote more than I post pictures, but then again the pictures help my blog – right? Yes, those ads that come through the mail can be tempting sometimes, the people that put them together know what they’re doing, trying to suck us into their evil scheme for us to spend money on things we don’t need. Wish they wouldn’t do that. And it is probably best to just throw them away.

Awww . . . that would be so sweet of you to make an adventure pouch for your sister! Would you like me to email you the steps, or do you want to come up with your own? Just let me know (I don’t have your email address).

Thanks for the comments, it was good to hear back from you!

      Blessings,
      Miss Emily Rose

    3. Modesty is truly from the heart. It is not determined by society or fashion, it is between God and each individual. And not only is modesty propriety in dress, but it is also humility expressed through word and deed. Dress is part of modesty, but there is much more to modesty than just wearing the right outfit. Thank you for encouraging modesty through your blog.

    4. I am so glad to see a young girl believe in modesty! and love the Lord. I was saved May 1st 2009 and shortly after the Lord convicted me of my clothes. I gave up pants and only wear long skirts. Out in public I get looks but thankful they are not staring at my behind anymore. I want people to see that I serve the Lord and Live my life for HIm.
