Is Harry Potter Harmless?

Many Christians have different opinions on the Harry Potter series.  Some don’t see anything wrong with them.

J.K.Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, recently stated that “Christian insperation” played a role in her writings.  Click here: How Christian is J.K.Rowling?

About a few weeks ago we watched a video about Harry Potter by Jan Markell

Here’s what Jan Markell says about Harry Potter:

Many Christians do not reject Harry Potter because they believe that Rowling’s character-filled Hogwarts’ School of Witchcraft is just such an imaginary place of made-up fun. Rowling herself claims that her stories are just fantasy, but extensive research by Wendell Amstutz of the National Community Resource Center in Rochester, MN has demonstrated the appearance of over 60 kinds of actual occult practices in the first four Potter books. Therefore, the dangerous deceit of Harry Potter lies in the fact that much of Rowling’s “imaginary” construct is based on the actual, “real world” values, beliefs and practices of the occult – specifically Wicca and Satanism. The world of Harry Potter is a false fantasy world: it is authentic occult fiction – albeit vicarious – occult experience presented as make-believe.

What God says:

Deuteronomy 18:10    Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.  Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord…

If these things are detestable to the Lord, should we be reading books and watching movies, that make these things, that are detestable to the Lord look good, and where the main character, the hero of the story, is doing these exact things and making them look harmless?

These books have sparked a curiosity in many, causing many children to dabble in the occult.  Wicca is on the rise.  Book stores carry books on witchcraft, casting spells…etc. that kids are being drawn to after reading the Harry Potter books.  Harry is their hero.

Can we really say that Harry Potter is harmless???

  3. Kira, I think it is good to think through what we are reading. I liked how you backed it up with the Bible. Love, Abby

  4. I’m really glad you posted this. I think a lot of Christians just consider it fiction, harmless, fiction, and it’s not to be taken lightly. Satan knows his time is running out so he’s using all his resources to ensnare God’s people and the unsaved into such things. God help us.

    Blessings,
    Miss Jocelyn
